Channel 10 News: Celebrating International Coffee Day

“Did you wake up and smell the coffee this morning?”

“Unfortunately, the first thing I get to smell is my caboodle trying to lick my face to death!”

This playful question kicked off Phillip Di Bella’s appearance on Channel 10 News for International Coffee Day. He shared insights into Australia’s coffee culture and the ethical considerations that accompany our daily brew.

When asked about the importance of knowing where our coffee comes from, Phillip emphasised that it’s crucial for consumers to understand the origins of their beans, especially since most coffee consumed in Australia is imported. At The Coffee Commune, we focus on traceable coffee by working directly with farmers to ensure fair practices and sustainable livelihoods. This commitment supports coffee-growing communities and promotes a responsible coffee ecosystem.

Phillip also addressed the recent rise in coffee prices at local cafés, noting that this situation is unprecedented. Costs for goods, utilities, and wages have all increased simultaneously, forcing café owners to pass some of these costs onto customers. As disposable incomes decline, finding a balance between affordability for consumers and sustainability for businesses becomes increasingly challenging. Unfortunately, the café industry is under significant pressure, with estimates that one in twelve cafés may close their doors. This underscores the need for community support and understanding during these tough times.

When asked about the coffee capital of Australia, Phillip confidently declared that Brisbane deserves the title. While Melbourne has long been viewed as the coffee hub, the quality of coffee has improved across all states, establishing Australia as a world-class coffee destination. What do you think?

As we celebrate our love for coffee this International Coffee Day, let’s remember the importance of ethical sourcing, the challenges faced by local businesses, and the vibrant coffee culture that unites us all.
